Four-string · ash body · his main bass
The brown one, and the one that does most of the work. An ash-bodied four-string from the first run of TRBs, worn down to the wood across the front from years of playing. The pickups in it are not the ones it left the factory with.
Four-string · made in Japan · ash body · rosewood board
The second TRB, and the backup: same model, no frets. Japanese-made, ash body, rosewood neck. Joe calls the pair of them his two Mark Ones.
Headless · carbon graphite through-neck · 1980s
A headless English bass from the 1980s, built around a carbon graphite neck that runs the whole length of the instrument, with figured wood wings either side. Status is the sound a lot of people hear as the eighties without knowing the name.
Pearl blue · hand-built in Birmingham
The Mark King bass — the model John Diggins built for Level 42, which is most of why anyone under fifty recognises the shape. Joe’s is in pearl blue.
Stacked, with the head on top
Barefaced build very light cabs in Brighton, which matters more than it sounds when the gear has to go up the stairs of a London pub. Joe runs two of them, one on the other, with a pedalboard in front.
